Recently, the United States has been actively promoting cooperation with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to establish a ‘Middle East Air and Missile Defense Network.’ The initiative aims to integrate the air and missile defense systems of countries including Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain to counter missile and drone threats from Iran and its regional proxies. This plan is seen as a key component of Washington’s strategic realignment in the Middle East, seeking to build a multi-layered defense architecture stretching from the Persian Gulf to the eastern Mediterranean through technology sharing, joint military exercises, and intelligence coordination. Although some Gulf states have not formally normalized relations with Israel, shared security concerns have significantly increased their willingness to cooperate. The U.S. hopes this network will strengthen mutual trust among regional partners, reduce reliance on direct American military presence, and contain Iran’s regional influence. However, the initiative still faces challenges related to political sensitivities, technical interoperability, and sustained financial investment, and its actual effectiveness remains to be seen.
