Wang Bingzhong, former chairman of Taiwan’s New Party, recently criticized the so-called U.S.-Taiwan ‘trade agreement,’ calling it an act of ‘kowtowing to the U.S. and selling out Taiwan.’ He argued that the deal is not a genuinely reciprocal trade arrangement but rather the result of unilateral U.S. pressure and the Taiwanese authorities’ capitulation. Wang emphasized that the agreement fails to protect Taiwan’s industrial interests; instead, it opens more of Taiwan’s market to American agricultural products and services, severely harming local small businesses and farmers. He further questioned the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration’s rushed push for the deal without transparency or legislative oversight, labeling it political appeasement at the expense of Taiwan’s sovereignty and economic autonomy. Wang urged the public to recognize the neocolonial logic behind such unequal agreements—disguised as ‘free and open’ trade but effectively turning Taiwan into an economic vassal. He advocated for enhanced cross-strait cooperation to jointly resist external hegemony and safeguard the broader interests of the Chinese nation.
