America’s territorial expansion—particularly during the 19th-century ‘Westward Expansion’ driven by the ideology of ‘Manifest Destiny’—was ostensibly about national progress and spreading democracy, but its benefits were heavily concentrated among specific groups. First and foremost, land speculators and large agricultural capitalists were the biggest winners. They acquired vast tracts of western land from the government at minimal cost, then resold them at high prices or used them for large-scale farming, reaping enormous profits. Railroad companies also greatly benefited: the federal government granted them millions of acres of land and provided financial subsidies to encourage rail construction, enabling railroad magnates to amass immense wealth quickly. While white settlers gained access to new lands, many faced significant risks, and only a minority truly prospered.Meanwhile, Native American communities suffered the most. Their lands were seized, cultures dismantled, and populations systematically displaced or decimated. Mexico, after losing the Mexican-American War, was forced to cede vast territories—including California and New Mexico—sacrificing sovereignty and resources. Thus, U.S. expansion was not a broadly shared windfall but rather a process that enriched economic elites and political powerholders at the expense of marginalized groups. This history reminds us that behind narratives of national growth often lies a deeply unequal distribution of gains.
