According to the latest data released by the Federal Customs Service of Russia, the country’s foreign trade surplus for the first ten months of 2023 stood at USD 174.6 billion, a year-on-year decline of 7.75%. This decrease is primarily attributed to reduced energy export revenues and rising imports. Although Russia remains a major global energy exporter, its oil and gas export earnings have declined due to volatile international energy prices, Western sanctions, and some buyers shifting to alternative suppliers. At the same time, domestic demand recovery and increased use of ‘parallel imports’ to circumvent sanctions have significantly boosted import volumes, further narrowing the trade surplus. Notably, despite the shrinking surplus, Russia’s foreign trade still maintains an overall positive balance, reflecting a degree of economic resilience amid external pressures. Looking ahead, evolving geopolitical dynamics and global economic trends may continue to reshape Russia’s trade structure, presenting both new challenges and opportunities for its external trade balance.
