Dahan (Great Cold) is the final solar term in the traditional Chinese 24 Solar Terms, usually occurring around January 20th. It marks the coldest period of the year, when yang energy is deeply stored and yin coldness reaches its peak. During this time, the body’s circulation of qi and blood slows down significantly, particularly affecting joints such as the knees. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), “cold causes contraction”—exposure to cold pathogens can lead to stagnation in the meridians and impaired qi and blood flow, resulting in or worsening knee pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.Therefore, during Dahan, it’s essential to focus on “warming and unblocking” to “thaw” the knee joints. “Warming” involves dispelling internal cold through diet, lifestyle adjustments, and moxibustion, while “unblocking” aims to promote circulation and open the meridians. One should consume warming foods like lamb, ginger, and longan, and avoid raw or cold items. Keeping the knees warm—using knee braces or applying heat—is crucial. Gentle exercises such as Tai Chi or Baduanjin can also enhance qi and blood flow. Additionally, moxibustion on acupoints like Zusanli (ST36), Yanglingquan (GB34), and Xiyan (EX-LE5) helps warm the channels, dispel cold, and invigorate blood circulation.Although Dahan is the coldest time, it also signals the subtle return of yang energy. By aligning with nature’s rhythm and nurturing the body appropriately, one can not only alleviate knee discomfort but also lay a strong foundation for health in the coming spring.
