Recently, the China National Space Administration announced a major scientific breakthrough from the Chang’e-6 mission: preliminary analysis of lunar soil samples collected from the South Pole–Aitken Basin on the Moon’s far side has revealed previously unobserved mineral compositions and enriched volatile elements not found in samples from the near side. This discovery provides new insights into the Moon’s geological evolution and suggests that the far side may have experienced a different impact history and thermal evolution compared to the near side. Additionally, traces of water molecules detected in the samples further support the hypothesis that water ice may exist in the lunar polar regions—an implication of great significance for future lunar research stations and in-situ resource utilization. As the first mission in human history to successfully return samples from the lunar far side, Chang’e-6 brought back 1.5 kilograms of regolith, now being jointly studied by Chinese and international scientists. The findings are expected to generate a series of high-impact scientific results and usher in a new era of lunar exploration.
