On June 27, 2024, the giant pandas ‘Xiao Xiao’ and ‘Lei Lei’ departed Japan to return to China. The two male pandas had been living at Adventure World in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, since 2011, where they became beloved icons and symbols of friendly people-to-people exchanges between China and Japan. They were loaned to Japan under a bilateral agreement on giant panda conservation and research, which stipulates that all pandas—and their offspring—remain the property of China and must be returned upon the conclusion of their loan period. After 13 years in Japan, their homecoming marks the end of a significant chapter in Sino-Japanese wildlife cooperation. Upon arrival in China, they will undergo quarantine and acclimatization at a base operated by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan Province, after which they may participate in breeding programs or public education initiatives. Their departure has deeply moved their Japanese fans and once again highlighted the giant panda’s unique role as a ‘diplomatic ambassador’ fostering international goodwill and collaboration.
