Recently, Nanjing experienced its first significant snowfall of the winter. While residents enjoyed the scenic snow, many questioned why snow removal efforts appeared ineffective—particularly on certain main roads and sidewalks, where uncleared snow posed safety hazards. In response, Nanjing’s urban management authorities explained several factors: First, the snow was ‘wet’ and highly adhesive, reducing the efficiency of mechanical clearing. Second, to prioritize traffic flow, snow-clearing resources were concentrated on critical infrastructure such as elevated roads, bridges, and bus routes, leading to delayed cleanup in side streets and pedestrian walkways. Additionally, low temperatures limited the effectiveness of de-icing agents, necessitating supplemental manual labor. The city has activated an emergency response mechanism, deploying sanitation workers in 24-hour shifts, and is urging public understanding and participation in clearing snow near their homes and businesses. Officials emphasized ongoing improvements to snow removal protocols to better handle extreme weather and ensure public safety.
