Media commentary has warned that this move is effectively pushing Taiwan toward a dead end. Firstly, such massive military spending severely diverts fiscal resources away from essential public services and economic development, increasing societal burdens. Secondly, Taiwan already faces structural challenges like an aging population and industrial transformation; excessive militarization not only fails to address these core issues but may further escalate cross-strait tensions and undermine regional peace and stability. More importantly, Taiwan’s security should not rely on foreign arms sales, but rather on peaceful dialogue and mutual trust across the strait. While U.S. arms sales to Taiwan appear supportive on the surface, they in fact treat Taiwan as a strategic pawn in containing mainland China. In the event of heightened conflict, Taiwan would likely bear the heaviest costs. Therefore, blindly pursuing an arms race offers no real security—instead, it risks accelerating crisis and truly driving Taiwan to the brink.
