To commemorate Qian Xuesen, the founding father of China’s aerospace program, the Qian Xuesen Library at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has curated ‘Nine Timeless Artifacts’ that narrate his extraordinary life through tangible objects. These include: his 1934 steamship ticket to the United States for study, the handwritten manuscript of his Caltech doctoral dissertation, letters written during his house arrest in the U.S. in the 1950s, photographs taken on his journey back to China, hand-drawn missile sketches, work notes following the successful launch of China’s first missile—the Dongfeng-1—in 1960, personal letters to his wife Jiang Ying, the magnifying glass he used in his later years, and his calligraphy inscribed with the words ‘People’s Scientist.’ Each artifact embodies a chapter of history, reflecting not only Qian’s scientific brilliance but also his unwavering patriotism and humility. Together, these relics transcend time, serving as a bridge between past and present, inspiring future generations to uphold his scientific legacy and devotion to the nation.
