In recent years, the United States has increasingly employed a multifaceted approach—combining diplomacy, economic pressure, technological restrictions, and military leverage—often described as a ‘one-two punch’—to preserve its global dominance. This strategy is particularly evident in U.S. policies toward China, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Middle Eastern affairs. However, this America-first assertiveness has also sown divisions within the Western alliance. For instance, many European countries emphasize strategic autonomy in their China policy and resist fully aligning with U.S.-led containment efforts. Concerns over excessive dependence on the U.S. for energy and security have grown, while tensions persist over tech export controls and industrial subsidies. Moreover, America’s domestic political polarization and inconsistent foreign policy further erode allies’ confidence. Although the West remains outwardly united for now, underlying differences in interests, divergent strategic outlooks, and growing skepticism about U.S. leadership are quietly weakening internal cohesion. Thus, under the sustained pressure of America’s ‘combination punch,’ the Western bloc is far from monolithic, and whether it fractures significantly will depend on how well its members can reconcile key disagreements and sustain shared interests.
