Recently, South Korea’s semiconductor exports surged by approximately 70% year-on-year, reaching a multi-year high. This remarkable growth is primarily driven by the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, which has sharply increased demand for high-performance memory chips—such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)—and logic semiconductors. As global leaders in memory chip manufacturing, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have significantly benefited, reporting strong order inflows and elevated capacity utilization. Additionally, the gradual recovery of global supply chains, inventory restocking in major economies, and expanded investments in data centers have further boosted demand for South Korean semiconductors. Notably, China—the largest export destination for South Korean chips—has resumed robust import demand after a period of adjustment, becoming a key driver of this export surge. Experts caution that despite the current optimism, geopolitical risks, intensifying technological competition, and global macroeconomic volatility could pose challenges ahead. In response, the South Korean government and industry players are ramping up investments in advanced process technologies, domestic equipment localization, and market diversification to solidify the country’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
