Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council responded to reports about Chinese coast guard vessels conducting routine patrols near Dongsha Island (Pratas Islands). A spokesperson stated that the Dongsha Islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times, and the coast guard’s lawful patrol and law enforcement activities in these waters are legitimate measures to safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights. These patrols aim to strengthen maritime control, prevent illegal activities, and ensure order and safety at sea. The spokesperson emphasized that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same Chinese nation, and upholding national territorial integrity is a shared responsibility of all Chinese people. Any attempts to split the country or undermine social stability will be firmly opposed. While adhering to the fundamental policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,’ the mainland remains committed to promoting peaceful cross-strait relations and enhancing mutual trust—but will never allow external forces or ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists to challenge China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.This coast guard operation underscores the Chinese government’s firm stance on sovereignty and jurisdiction over the South China Sea islands and adjacent waters, as well as its resolve and capability to govern the seas in accordance with the law.
