Recently, The Lancet Public Health, a sub-journal of The Lancet, published a significant study mapping global trends in Healthy Life Expectancy (HALE). Drawing on data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, the research analyzed HALE changes across 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Findings show that while global average life expectancy continues to rise, the number of years people live in good health—free from major illness or disability—is increasing at a much slower pace. For instance, although high-income countries enjoy longer lifespans, their populations often face chronic diseases in later life. In contrast, some low- and middle-income countries have seen faster gains in HALE due to improvements in basic healthcare and public health interventions. The study underscores the need for policies to shift focus from merely extending lifespan to enhancing quality of life, promoting ‘healthy aging.’ Experts urge governments to strengthen preventive care, chronic disease management, and healthy lifestyle promotion to achieve the goal of not just living longer—but living better.
