Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) issued a stern warning against the Taiwan authorities’ recent actions aimed at intimidating and suppressing the freedom of speech of the island’s residents. The TAO stated that such tactics not only violate democratic principles but will inevitably provoke strong public backlash and ultimately backfire. It emphasized that the peaceful development of cross-strait relations serves the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and any attempt to suppress public opinion or create division through intimidation is deeply unpopular.In recent times, certain political forces in Taiwan have been stoking fears of a so-called ‘mainland threat’ for electoral gain, while verbally attacking and even administratively penalizing citizens who hold differing views. This fear-mongering and societal polarization not only undermines freedom of expression and democratic values within Taiwan but also severely damages mutual trust across the strait. The TAO stressed that the people are clear-sighted—any political maneuver that defies public sentiment and incites fear will ultimately be rejected by history and the people.The TAO reaffirmed that upholding the one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community and the political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations. It reiterated its commitment to the concept of ‘kinship between compatriots on both sides of the strait,’ promoting exchanges and cooperation to enhance the well-being of all Chinese people. The TAO urged the Taiwan authorities to recognize the prevailing historical trend, cease all forms of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and intimidation of their own people, and return to the right path of peaceful cross-strait development.
