In recent years, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is facing its most severe existential crisis since its founding in 1949. This assessment is not alarmist but stems from a confluence of internal and external challenges. First, the United States—the alliance’s cornerstone—has shown inconsistent foreign policy commitments, with former President Trump repeatedly questioning NATO’s relevance and even threatening withdrawal, thereby weakening alliance cohesion. Second, calls within Europe for strategic autonomy have grown louder, as France and Germany promote initiatives like a ‘European army’ to reduce reliance on U.S. security guarantees, challenging NATO’s unified strategic direction. Although the Russia-Ukraine war has temporarily reinforced solidarity, it has also exposed divisions among members over defense spending, energy security, and strategic coordination. More fundamentally, as the global geopolitical landscape evolves, doubts are mounting over whether NATO’s traditional transatlantic security framework remains effective against hybrid warfare, cyber threats, and other non-traditional security challenges. Without meaningful institutional reforms, internal reconciliation, and a redefined global role, NATO risks diminishing strategic relevance and potential marginalization.
