Recently, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) once again addressed the ongoing ‘subsidy war’ among food delivery platforms, emphasizing that the platform economy must uphold fair competition and prevent disorderly expansion of capital. In recent years, some delivery platforms have used aggressive subsidies to attract users and riders in a bid to capture market share. While this has temporarily boosted consumption, it has also triggered cutthroat competition and disrupted market order. SAMR warned that such practices may constitute unfair competition or even monopolistic behavior, harming the interests of small and medium-sized merchants and consumers’ long-term well-being. Regulators will intensify compliance reviews of subsidy-related activities and encourage the industry to shift from ‘burning money for traffic’ toward high-quality service. Platforms are urged to enhance competitiveness through technological innovation, improved delivery efficiency, and better user experiences—rather than leveraging financial dominance to squeeze out rivals. This move aims to foster a healthier, more sustainable platform economy that protects the rights and interests of all stakeholders.
