Recently, Harbin’s Central Avenue has unveiled a creative urban renewal initiative titled “Creative Warm Stoves Light Up the Ice City.” As one of China’s most iconic century-old pedestrian streets, Central Avenue not only draws visitors during the winter tourism peak with its European-style architecture and ice sculptures, but now also offers a dual experience of warmth and artistry through uniquely designed heating stoves. Created collaboratively by local artists and designers, these stoves feature diverse forms—some incorporating Northeast Chinese folk motifs, others integrating modern interactive technology. They provide practical heating while doubling as new photo-worthy landmarks. At night, built-in LED lights within the stoves shimmer alongside traditional ice lanterns, creating a dreamy and romantic winter ambiance. This project not only enhances the humanistic warmth of public spaces but also reflects Harbin’s innovative efforts in blending culture, tourism, urban aesthetics, and public service design—bringing a distinctive sense of coziness and vitality to the so-called “Ice City” amidst the cold.
