In today’s fast-paced society, the two-day weekend should be a basic right for workers, yet in certain industries or companies, it has increasingly become a ‘luxury.’ The prevalence of overtime culture and excessive performance pressure often deprive employees of genuine rest during weekends. This not only harms their physical and mental well-being but also contradicts the original intent of labor laws designed to protect workers’ right to rest.Since its implementation in China in the 1990s, the two-day weekend system has aimed to improve quality of life and promote social harmony and economic development. However, in practice, some employers—under the guise of ‘hard work’ or ‘dedication’—implicitly encourage or even mandate overtime, rendering the weekend break meaningless. Over time, this leads to burnout, anxiety, and even occupational illnesses, ultimately reducing productivity and creativity.A two-day weekend should not be a privilege for the few but a fundamental entitlement for all workers. Governments must strengthen labor inspections, companies should adopt people-centered management practices, and employees need to be more aware of their rights. Only then can we truly achieve work-life balance and restore the weekend to what it should be—not a luxury, but a norm.
