Recently, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) has become China’s first region to surpass a GDP of RMB 14.5 trillion (approximately USD 2.05 trillion) in 2023, marking a significant milestone on its path toward high-quality development. This achievement highlights the GBA’s growing role as one of the most dynamic and competitive metropolitan clusters globally, driven by strengths in technological innovation, advanced manufacturing, financial services, and international openness.Covering Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions along with nine cities in Guangdong Province, the GBA spans about 56,000 square kilometers and is home to over 86 million people. Leveraging the unique advantages of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework and a highly internationalized environment, the region is rapidly building an innovation-driven modern industrial system. Key cooperation platforms such as Qianhai, Hengqin, and Nansha continue to unlock policy benefits, attracting high-end talent, capital, and technology. Meanwhile, infrastructure projects like the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link have significantly enhanced regional connectivity and integration.Experts note that with the deep implementation of the Outline Development Plan for the GBA, the region is poised to lead global trends in digital economy, green and low-carbon development, and artificial intelligence, ultimately aiming to become a world-class bay area and metropolitan cluster.
