Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, enjoying extensive self-governance, although foreign affairs, defense, and monetary policy remain under Danish control. In recent years, Greenland’s geopolitical significance has grown due to the Arctic region’s strategic value and vast natural resources. In 2019, then-U.S. President Donald Trump publicly expressed interest in ‘purchasing’ Greenland, sparking international attention and strong local opposition. The Greenlandic Self-Government explicitly stated: ‘Sovereignty is a red line—non-negotiable.’Under the 2009 Self-Government Act, Greenland gained broad authority over internal affairs, justice, and natural resource management, and retains the right to pursue full independence through a future referendum. While still economically reliant on Danish subsidies, Greenland is actively promoting resource development and international partnerships to strengthen its autonomy. In the face of external attempts to influence its sovereignty, Greenland emphasizes that its people alone have the right to determine their future. Any issue concerning sovereignty must be led by Greenlanders themselves—a stance reflecting both national self-determination and a firm commitment to territorial integrity and dignity.
