Recently, the European Union and India announced plans to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement dubbed a ‘deal of the century’ by media outlets, signaling deepened cooperation amid shifting geopolitical and economic landscapes. The agreement spans critical areas including trade, green energy, digital technology, semiconductor supply chains, scientific research, innovation, and security cooperation. Facing global supply chain reconfiguration, intensifying U.S.-China rivalry, and uncertainties stemming from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the EU aims to advance its ‘de-risking’ strategy by partnering with India—a rising global power—to reduce overreliance on any single market. Meanwhile, India seeks to elevate its position in global value chains and gain access to advanced technologies and investment through closer ties with the EU. Notably, both sides plan to establish an EU-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC) to align technical standards and coordinate export control policies. Although differences remain—particularly on market access, data localization, and labor standards—the agreement marks a pivotal convergence of the Indo-Pacific strategy and Europe’s strategic autonomy, potentially reshaping 21st-century Eurasian cooperation.
