In recent years, Greenland has drawn global attention due to its abundant natural resources and strategic geographic location. In 2019, then-U.S. President Donald Trump publicly expressed interest in ‘purchasing’ Greenland, sparking international outcry and highlighting the island’s geopolitical sensitivity. Following strong reaffirmations of sovereignty by Denmark and assertions of self-determination by Greenland’s autonomous government, many assumed the so-called ‘crisis’ had subsided. However, the situation remains far from resolved. On one hand, accelerated ice melt caused by climate change is revealing potential mineral, oil, and gas reserves and opening new Arctic shipping routes, drawing increased strategic interest from multiple nations. On the other hand, debates within Greenland about full independence from Denmark continue to intensify. Although no immediate plans for independence exist, the political trajectory remains uncertain. Moreover, growing competition among major powers—such as the U.S., China, and Russia—in the Arctic region keeps Greenland at the center of geopolitical tensions. Thus, the ‘Greenland crisis’ has not truly been resolved; rather, it continues to evolve in more complex forms within the shifting global landscape.
