Recently, U.S. political figures have again raised the issue of Greenland, drawing international attention. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with extensive self-governance, though Denmark retains control over its defense and foreign affairs. The U.S. has maintained Thule Air Base in Greenland since the Cold War, underscoring its strategic importance. With Arctic ice melting, new shipping routes opening, and untapped natural resources becoming accessible, Greenland’s geopolitical value is growing. Some analysts suggest that Washington’s repeated public interest— including former President Trump’s reported idea of ‘purchasing’ Greenland—is less a serious proposal and more a strategic signal or rhetorical pressure tactic. It serves to remind European allies, particularly within NATO, that the U.S. remains a dominant player in Arctic affairs. It may also aim to subtly widen transatlantic differences on security and resource policies, reinforcing American influence in forums like the Arctic Council. However, dismissing this as merely ‘playing games with Europe’ would be simplistic. The U.S. Arctic strategy is part of a long-term, systematic effort. Meanwhile, European nations—especially Denmark and the EU—are highly sensitive about sovereignty and territorial integrity and are unlikely to concede easily. Thus, while Washington’s rhetoric may seem theatrical, it reflects a genuine shift in great-power competition in the Arctic, not mere political jest.
