Amid the tides of globalization and modernization, many traditional folk customs risk being marginalized or even eroded. Yet folklore, as a vital carrier of a nation’s cultural DNA, embodies local history, collective memory, and identity. Its ‘authentic essence’—characterized by authenticity, everyday relevance, and community participation—must be preserved. The key to safeguarding this essence lies in ‘living transmission’: on one hand, we must avoid over-commercializing or theatricalizing folk traditions, reducing them to mere performance symbols; on the other, communities—especially younger generations—should be actively engaged in practicing customs in daily life, such as through festivals, rituals, handicrafts, and the use of local dialects. Additionally, educational systems and digital media can play supportive roles by integrating folklore into curricula and disseminating it through documentaries, short videos, and other formats that respect its original form, thereby fostering public cultural awareness. Only when folk traditions return to everyday life, take root in communities, and are passed down across generations can their authentic essence endure and thrive amid changing times.
