Recently, several economists have proposed raising the monthly pension for Chinese farmers to 1,000 RMB to address the challenges of rapid rural aging and inadequate basic living security. Currently, the national minimum standard for the basic pension under the urban-rural resident pension scheme is only around 100 RMB per month—far below the pension levels enjoyed by urban workers—and is insufficient to meet the basic needs of elderly rural residents. Experts argue that increasing farmers’ pensions would not only improve their quality of life but also stimulate rural consumption, narrow the urban-rural gap, and reflect social equity and national recognition of agricultural laborers’ contributions. As China advances its rural revitalization strategy, building a fairer and more sustainable pension system has become a policy priority. Although fiscal constraints exist, the goal is achievable through optimizing government spending, increasing central fiscal transfers, and encouraging local government co-financing. Such a move would significantly enhance farmers’ sense of gain, happiness, and security, laying a solid foundation for achieving common prosperity.
