Recently, a solo exhibition dedicated to Dieter Rams—widely hailed as the ‘father of German industrial design’—opened at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai. The exhibition comprehensively showcases Rams’ iconic works from the 1950s onward, created during his tenure at Braun and Vitsœ, including audio equipment, radios, calculators, and furniture. It systematically explores his enduring design philosophy: ‘Less, but better.’As one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century, Rams formulated the ‘Ten Principles for Good Design,’ which continue to shape global design practices today. Notably, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs openly acknowledged Rams’ profound influence on Apple’s product aesthetics. Through original sketches, product prototypes, archival footage, and interactive installations, the exhibition vividly illustrates how Rams integrated functionalism, minimalist aesthetics, and sustainability into everyday objects, steering industrial design toward a balance of rationality and human-centered thinking. This Shanghai exhibition offers Chinese audiences a rare opportunity to experience the essence of German design up close and highlights the deepening cultural and creative exchange between China and Germany. The show will run through this autumn, drawing design enthusiasts and professionals alike.
