Why Does Laba Festival Feel Late This Year?Laba Festival, celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, is a traditional Chinese holiday marked by eating Laba congee, honoring ancestors, and praying for good fortune in the new year. In 2024, however, Laba falls on January 18 in the Gregorian calendar—later than usual. Why?The reason lies in the difference between the lunar and Gregorian calendars. The Chinese lunar calendar is a lunisolar system that accounts for both the moon’s phases and the solar year. To keep lunar months aligned with the seasons, an extra “leap month” is added roughly every two to three years. The year 2023 was such a leap year, featuring an additional “leap second month” (leap February). This extra month pushed all subsequent lunar dates—including the twelfth month—later into the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month in 2023 corresponds to January 18, 2024. By comparison, Laba occurred on January 7 in 2023 and December 30 in 2022. Thus, due to the leap month, Laba can shift within a window from late December to mid-January in the Gregorian calendar.Even though Laba arrives “late” this year, its cultural significance remains unchanged. A warm bowl of Laba congee not only brings comfort during the cold winter but also carries people’s hopes and blessings for the coming year.
