In recent years, as global awareness of climate change and environmental pollution has grown, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has been widely recognized as a key strategy for improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Numerous studies indicate a strong positive correlation between EV adoption and reductions in air pollution. Conventional internal combustion engine vehicles emit significant amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), and carbon dioxide (CO₂) during operation—pollutants that contribute to urban smog and pose serious risks to respiratory health. In contrast, EVs produce virtually zero tailpipe emissions. Moreover, as electricity generation becomes increasingly powered by renewable sources such as wind and solar, the overall lifecycle emissions of EVs are significantly lower than those of gasoline-powered vehicles.Regions like China, Norway, and California in the United States exemplify this trend. With expanded charging infrastructure and supportive policies such as purchase incentives, EV ownership has surged, coinciding with measurable improvements in air quality. For instance, Beijing saw its annual average PM2.5 concentration drop by over 50% between 2015 and 2022, while the number of new energy vehicles increased nearly tenfold during the same period. Although air pollution is influenced by multiple factors—including industrial emissions and weather conditions—transportation electrification remains a critical pathway for emission reduction. Accelerating EV adoption thus not only advances carbon neutrality goals but also delivers long-term public health and urban sustainability benefits.
