According to the latest data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, Shanghai, Beijing, and Zhejiang continue to lead the nation in per capita disposable income. In 2023, Shanghai residents recorded the highest income at RMB 84,834, followed by Beijing at RMB 81,752, and Zhejiang at RMB 63,830—significantly above the national average of approximately RMB 39,218. This persistent ranking highlights ongoing regional economic disparities while underscoring the competitive edge of eastern coastal regions in advanced industries, technological innovation, and high-end services. As direct-controlled municipalities, Shanghai and Beijing benefit from concentrated high-quality resources, high-value-added industries, and a large number of well-paying jobs, attracting top talent nationwide. Meanwhile, Zhejiang stands out for its vibrant private economy, robust digital sector, and its role as a national pilot zone for common prosperity, which has driven relatively balanced income growth between urban and rural residents. Notably, Zhejiang maintains one of the smallest urban-rural income gaps in the country.Experts emphasize that while Shanghai, Beijing, and Zhejiang excel in income levels, central and western regions must accelerate development through improved business environments, industrial relocation, and enhanced infrastructure to narrow the gap and achieve more balanced and high-quality regional coordination.
