Every year on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, a traditional Laba porridge distribution event takes place beneath the western city wall of Datong Ancient City. This custom originates from the Buddhist commemoration of ‘Buddha’s Enlightenment Day’ and has merged with Chinese folk traditions of praying for blessings and welcoming the new year. Early in the morning, monks from local temples and volunteers gather at the foot of the western wall to prepare large cauldrons of Laba porridge. The porridge typically contains more than eight ingredients—such as glutinous rice, red beans, peanuts, jujubes, lotus seeds, longan, and walnuts—symbolizing bountiful harvests and good fortune. The steaming hot porridge is offered free of charge to residents and tourists alike, spreading warmth, kindness, and the enduring humanistic spirit of this ancient city. As a renowned historical and cultural city, Datong’s imposing and majestic city walls lend a solemn and timeless atmosphere to this charitable act, making it a distinctive cultural highlight of winter. The event not only preserves traditional festival customs but also strengthens community bonds, embodying the Chinese virtue of ‘sharing blessings through generosity.’
