Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui, recently announced the establishment of the Hong Kong Gold Settlement Company to enhance local gold market infrastructure and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international precious metals trading hub. The company, set up jointly by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and industry stakeholders, aims to provide efficient, secure, and transparent gold settlement and delivery services, reduce counterparty risk, and promote standardized and locally cleared gold transactions. This move is seen as a strategic step in reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as a global financial center, particularly amid the internationalization of the renminbi and greater financial integration within the Greater Bay Area. The new platform will offer investors more convenient access to gold investments and support the development of offshore RMB-denominated gold products. Hui emphasized that the initiative will not only attract international gold traders to establish operations in Hong Kong but also enhance the resilience and depth of the city’s financial ecosystem, aligning with the national 14th Five-Year Plan’s vision for Hong Kong as an international financial center.
