Recently, local police uncovered a case of illegal wildlife hunting during a surprise raid. A man was taken into custody on suspicion of illegally capturing rhesus macaques, a nationally protected second-class species in China. Authorities found live macaques and hunting equipment at his residence, along with a significant quantity of unquarantined wild boar meat. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had long used traps and electric fences in mountainous areas to hunt wild animals, consuming some himself and selling others privately. While wild boars are not classified as nationally protected species, their hunting is still regulated under local wildlife protection laws, and unquarantined wild meat poses serious public health risks. Rhesus macaques, however, are strictly protected by law—illegal hunting, trading, or keeping them is prohibited. The suspect is now under formal investigation, and the case is ongoing. This incident serves as a reminder that protecting wildlife is every citizen’s responsibility, and any actions that harm ecological balance or endanger public safety will be met with strict legal consequences.
