Recently, People’s Daily published a commentary titled ‘Making “Ghost Takeaway” Nowhere to Hide,’ addressing food safety risks and regulatory gaps in the online food delivery industry. ‘Ghost takeaway’ refers to businesses operating without physical stores, business licenses, or hygiene permits, selling solely through food delivery platforms. Often hidden in residential buildings or using fake addresses, these vendors evade supervision and pose significant food safety hazards. The article points out that lax review processes and inadequate management by some platforms have inadvertently allowed such practices to persist.People’s Daily calls for collaborative efforts among platforms, regulators, and consumers to strengthen food delivery safety. Platforms should enhance qualification checks and dynamic inspections, using technological means to verify merchant authenticity; market regulatory authorities must improve efficiency in investigations, adopting an ‘internet + supervision’ model for consistent governance; consumers are also advised to stay vigilant, verify merchant information, and report suspicious stores. Only through multi-party cooperation can the ecosystem of ‘ghost takeaway’ be eradicated, ensuring public food safety.
