Although officially labeled as a ‘non-military force,’ Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) possess highly modernized military capabilities in practice. Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution renounces war and prohibits maintaining land, sea, and air forces. However, since its establishment in 1954, the JSDF has evolved into a well-equipped and highly trained quasi-military organization with approximately 247,000 personnel across its Ground, Maritime, and Air branches. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force operates advanced vessels, including the Izumo-class helicopter destroyers—some of which have been modified to carry U.S.-made F-35B stealth fighters, effectively functioning as light aircraft carriers. The Air Self-Defense Force fields sophisticated aircraft such as the F-15J and F-2, and is progressively integrating F-35 stealth fighters into its fleet. Meanwhile, the Ground Self-Defense Force is equipped with Type 10 main battle tanks, Patriot missile systems, and long-range rocket artillery. In recent years, Japan has significantly increased its defense budget, aiming to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP over five years starting in 2023. Additionally, interoperability with U.S. forces continues to strengthen, enhancing Japan’s role in the Indo-Pacific security architecture. Despite constitutional constraints, the JSDF’s actual combat capability now rivals or even surpasses that of several traditional military powers.
