“Wu Jiu” (the fifth nine-day period after the Winter Solstice) is a phase in China’s traditional “Counting Nine” cold season calculation. According to conventional experience, “San Jiu” (third nine-day period) and “Si Jiu” (fourth nine-day period) are typically the coldest times of the year (around mid-to-late January). By the time of “Wu Jiu” (usually in February), temperatures have begun to gradually rise, so “Wu Jiu” is generally not colder than “Si Jiu”. This phenomenon is related to changes in solar altitude angle and surface heat balance: although solar radiation increases after the Winter Solstice, heat loss from the Earth’s surface continues, causing temperatures to reach their lowest around “Si Jiu”. By “Wu Jiu”, the cumulative effect of heat accumulation becomes apparent, and the cold gradually moderates. However, specific weather conditions can vary depending on regional factors and atmospheric circulation patterns each year, so actual meteorological data should be referenced for accuracy.
