Recent heavy rainfall has further exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 90% of temporary tents in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed by storms and flooding. These tents serve as the primary shelter for hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians, many of whom fled their homes following the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas and now rely on makeshift accommodations.Years of conflict have severely degraded Gaza’s infrastructure, leaving drainage systems largely nonfunctional. This has caused rapid water accumulation and widespread flooding. Most tents are pitched on low-lying or unpaved ground, offering little resistance to harsh weather. The cold, damp conditions also heighten the risk of disease, posing a serious threat—especially to children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.International aid agencies are urgently delivering tarps, blankets, and emergency supplies, but relief efforts are hampered by border restrictions and logistical challenges. The UN is calling on all parties to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access so that critical assistance can reach affected populations without delay. Experts warn that without immediate improvements to living conditions, the rainy season could trigger a far larger health and survival crisis.
