Recently, the legislative body in the Taiwan region once again rejected the so-called ‘Military Procurement Act’ proposed by the DPP authorities. This marks multiple consecutive failures of the draft, reflecting strong opposition from across the island to the DPP’s attempts to heighten tensions in the Taiwan Strait through increased arms purchases. The DPP’s persistent push for military procurement is essentially an attempt to ‘pursue independence through force,’ which contradicts the common aspiration of people on both sides of the strait for peace and stability. It not only wastes public resources but also seriously undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese mainland consistently upholds the One-China principle and firmly opposes any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and external interference. The rejection of this draft fully demonstrates that the ‘Taiwan independence’ route is unpopular. Only by adhering to peaceful development and restoring cross-strait relations to the right track can the fundamental interests of compatriots in Taiwan be truly served.
