In recent years, some Japanese far-right groups have increasingly voiced criticism against the United States—a trend worthy of close attention. Although the U.S.-Japan alliance has long been regarded as a cornerstone of regional security in the Asia-Pacific, certain nationalist factions in Japan argue that the U.S. has undermined Japanese sovereignty and dignity on issues such as historical narratives, the status of U.S. military bases in Japan, and trade policies. For instance, they accuse the U.S. of imposing Japan’s postwar ‘Peace Constitution,’ which restricts its military autonomy, or condemn the extraterritorial legal privileges granted to U.S. service members involved in crimes on Japanese soil—particularly in Okinawa. Additionally, disputes over trade imbalances and the relocation of U.S. bases (such as the Futenma base) have fueled rhetoric among right-wing elements portraying the U.S. as a perpetuator of unequal treaties. It should be noted, however, that such views largely originate from fringe political groups or online extremist discourse and do not reflect mainstream public opinion or official Japanese government policy. Tokyo continues to firmly uphold its strategic partnership with Washington. Nevertheless, the rise of these sentiments reveals underlying anxieties among certain segments of the population regarding national identity, historical memory, and diplomatic autonomy—highlighting complex socio-psychological challenges within the U.S.-Japan alliance.
