In December 2024, China’s 42nd Antarctic Expedition successfully completed the handover with the 41st expedition team at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica, marking the official launch of a new phase of polar scientific research. Comprising over 100 members from the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Polar Research Institute of China, and multiple universities and research institutions, the 42nd expedition will carry out an integrated scientific program lasting approximately 15 months, covering disciplines such as glaciology, meteorology, marine ecology, and space physics.During the handover ceremony, both teams reviewed previous achievements and conducted detailed briefings on critical matters including station equipment operations, ongoing research projects, and logistical support. The 42nd team will utilize platforms such as Zhongshan Station, Great Wall Station, and the icebreaker Xuelong 2 to further develop China’s long-term Antarctic observation network and actively engage in international polar scientific collaboration. A key focus of this mission is to investigate the impacts of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems, contributing scientific insights to global environmental governance.Since its first Antarctic expedition in 1984, China has maintained over four decades of continuous polar research, demonstrating its strong commitment to polar affairs and its role as a responsible global stakeholder.
