As of 2024, all 22 survivors of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ system who were filmed for the 2013 documentary ‘Twenty Two’ have passed away. Directed by Guo Ke, this film was China’s first feature-length documentary centered on comfort women survivors, capturing their later years with a restrained and respectful visual approach. Upon its release, the film drew widespread public attention, reviving collective memory of this dark chapter in history and fostering greater empathy and respect for victims of wartime sexual violence.With the passing of these elderly women—who directly endured the atrocities of the comfort women system—an entire generation of firsthand witnesses is vanishing. Their deaths mark not only the end of individual lives but also the irreversible loss of direct testimonies. This underscores the urgent need to preserve historical memory through oral history projects, archival efforts, and comprehensive education.Although the survivors are no longer with us, their stories must not be forgotten. Through film, literature, and education, we bear the responsibility to pass this history on to future generations—to honor their suffering, prevent such tragedies from recurring, and pay solemn tribute to all women victimized by war.
