In recent years, to improve the efficiency of deposit allocation and better serve diverse customer segments, some banks have begun piloting a ‘tiered minimum deposit threshold’ mechanism as an alternative to the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all interest rate’ approach. The latter applies a uniform interest rate regardless of deposit size, failing to reflect differences in funding scale and risk-based pricing. In contrast, the tiered system sets varying minimum deposit thresholds linked to differentiated interest rates: larger deposits require higher thresholds but offer more attractive returns. This approach incentivizes large, long-term deposits while helping banks optimize their liability structure and reduce overall funding costs. At the same time, even small savers retain access to a baseline interest rate, balancing fairness and efficiency. By enhancing banks’ ability to price deposits more precisely, this model advances the market-oriented reform of deposit rates and represents a key step in financial supply-side reforms.
