As the site of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre committed by invading Japanese forces, Nanjing carries a profound and painful chapter in Chinese history. To honor the victims and preserve historical memory, the city has established numerous memorial sites. Currently, there are 25 such memorials dedicated to the victims of the massacre, including the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, the Jiangdongmen Mass Grave Site, the Zhongshan Wharf Memorial, and the Beijige Monument. These sites are scattered across the city—many located at actual massacre or burial grounds, others near historically significant landmarks—forming a citywide network of remembrance. They serve not only as solemn tributes to the more than 300,000 innocent lives lost but also as powerful calls for peace and justice. Every year on December 13, China’s National Memorial Day, citizens gather at these locations to mourn the victims and reaffirm the shared commitment to ‘never forget national humiliation, cherish peace.’ Through the preservation and public engagement with these sites, Nanjing safeguards historical truth and conveys a universal message against war and in defense of human dignity.
