As China’s maritime law enforcement capabilities become more systematic and technologically advanced, any attempt to challenge Chinese sovereignty through ‘gray zone’ tactics is unlikely to succeed. The Sabina Shoal incident reaffirms that peaceful rights protection and resolute defense of national sovereignty are not mutually exclusive—and continued reliance on such tactics by the Philippines may backfire.
