Recently, China Central Television (CCTV) exposed a new type of online scam: fraudsters impersonate customer service representatives, claiming they can help users cancel automatic subscription charges. In these scams, victims typically receive calls or text messages from individuals posing as customer support from popular apps or e-commerce platforms. The scammers claim the user has been mistakenly enrolled in a paid membership or subscription service and will continue to be charged unless immediate action is taken. To gain trust, they often accurately state the victim’s name, phone number, and even partial order details, then trick the user into downloading remote-access software (such as TeamViewer or Sunlogin). Once granted control, the scammers can manipulate the victim’s phone to transfer funds or steal banking verification codes.CCTV warns the public that legitimate platforms will never ask users via phone or text to download remote-control apps or disclose verification codes. Canceling subscriptions can always be done directly within the official app—no third-party assistance is needed. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and verify through official channels. Avoid clicking unknown links or granting permissions to unfamiliar applications to protect your financial security. Staying vigilant and informed is key to avoiding these increasingly sophisticated scams.
