As a crucial flood-buffering reservoir and ecological barrier in the Yangtze River Basin, Poyang Lake’s critically low water levels threaten drinking water supplies and agricultural irrigation for millions of residents, while also endangering habitats for migratory birds, fish migration routes, and the broader wetland ecosystem. Experts are urging enhanced coordinated water resource management across the basin, improved drought-response capabilities, and long-term ecological conservation strategies to address increasingly frequent extreme hydrological events driven by climate change.
