“Snow Eagle 601” is China’s first fixed-wing aircraft dedicated to polar operations. Since its deployment in 2015, it has safely flown for a decade, accumulating a total distance of 800,000 kilometers—equivalent to nearly 20 laps around the Earth’s equator. Named after the “Snow Eagle” near China’s Kunlun Station in Antarctica, the aircraft represents a major milestone in China’s polar research infrastructure. Based on the Basler BT-67 airframe and specially modified for extreme polar conditions, Snow Eagle 601 features short takeoff and landing capabilities, cold-weather resilience, and long-range cruising performance. It supports a wide range of missions, including ice-sheet surveys, cargo transport, personnel delivery, and emergency rescues. Over the past ten years, it has played a pivotal role in multiple Chinese Antarctic expeditions, significantly enhancing scientific research and logistical support capabilities in Antarctica’s interior—particularly along the vital aerial route between Zhongshan Station and Kunlun Station, often referred to as the “Antarctic Skyway.” The 800,000-kilometer milestone not only symbolizes China’s leap from zero to world-class capability in polar aviation but also underscores its growing leadership in polar exploration.
