You might not know that Handan, a city in Hebei Province, is closely linked to more than 1,500 Chinese idioms (chengyu). As the capital of the ancient State of Zhao during the Warring States period, Handan boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage—many historical events and legendary figures originated here, giving rise to numerous chengyu. For example, ‘Learning to Walk in Handan’ tells the story of a man from Yan who traveled to Handan to imitate local walking styles but ended up forgetting how to walk altogether—a metaphor for losing one’s identity through blind imitation. ‘Returning the Jade Intact to Zhao’ recounts how Lin Xiangru bravely ensured the safe return of the precious Heshi Jade to Zhao, symbolizing the successful fulfillment of a mission. Other well-known idioms like ‘Bearing a Rod of Thorns to Apologize,’ ‘Armchair Strategy,’ and ‘Mao Sui Recommending Himself’ also stem from Handan or Zhao’s history. In total, 1,584 idioms are associated with Handan—the highest number for any Chinese city—earning it the title ‘Capital of Chinese Chengyu.’ These idioms not only enrich the Chinese language but also embody timeless wisdom and cultural values that continue to resonate in daily communication and literature today.
