In recent years, the United States has significantly intensified its intervention and strategic engagement in Latin America—its traditional ‘backyard’—a move widely described as ‘throwing a heavy punch in its own backyard.’ These actions include bolstering military presence, promoting economic cooperation initiatives, pressuring left-leaning governments, and aligning with right-wing allies. The underlying motives are threefold: first, to counter the growing influence of external powers like China and Russia in the region and preserve U.S. geopolitical dominance; second, to secure access to critical resources such as lithium and copper, which are vital for America’s clean energy and high-tech industries; and third, to reshape the Western Hemisphere order by reinforcing U.S.-centric regional alliances through institutions like the Organization of American States (OAS). Notably, while Washington often frames these efforts in terms of ‘democracy’ and ‘security,’ they frequently overlook Latin American nations’ sovereignty and developmental needs, potentially exacerbating political polarization and social instability. In the long run, without genuine, equitable, and mutually beneficial cooperation, America’s ‘backyard strategy’ may struggle to achieve sustainable success.
