In June 2024, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission announced that Ren Yuzhong, former member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Peking University, had been expelled from both the Communist Party and his public position (commonly referred to as ‘double expulsion’). The investigation found that Ren had abandoned his ideals and original mission, violated the CPC Central Committee’s Eight-point Regulation on improving conduct, and accepted gifts and cash that could influence the impartial performance of his duties. He also abused his position to seek benefits for others in areas such as student admissions and project contracts, accepting massive bribes in the process—acts涉嫌 constituting bribery. His behavior gravely breached Party discipline, constituted official misconduct, and涉嫌 criminal offenses, with serious negative consequences. Following deliberation by the CCDI Standing Committee and approval by the CPC Central Committee, Ren was expelled from the Party and removed from public office; his illicit gains were confiscated; and his case was transferred to prosecutors for legal review and potential indictment. This case underscores the Chinese leadership’s unwavering commitment to strict Party self-governance and its resolve to combat corruption in higher education institutions.
